Accent tiles, made by hand and never mass produced, are one of our products. Handcrafted tiles are, by nature, never completely square as are the mass produced dry pressed variety; but, these are very close. They are as stated, “made by hand” and it is a completely different process, delivering a distinctly unique product for your decorating pleasure.
First the clay is squeezed between two rollers to produce a slab of uniform thickness. Then the artist, not an artist assistant, cuts the clay into tiles approximately 2”, 4”, or 6” square. Attention is required during the initial drying time to ensure flatness. Next comes an underglaze painting which is done while there is still some moisture in the clay. Designs may require up to a dozen colors, plus carving, to achieve the desired look.
After the tiles dry, the first (bisque) firing takes place, followed by an application of clear glaze and the final firing. No decals are ever used, so every repeated design will vary slightly from tile to tile. The pictures on this web site are only suggestions of what we can create.
